파나마 in / 칸쿤 out

칸쿤 로컬 렌트카 업체들에 대하여 검색해보다 황당한 사실 하나를 알게 되었다(나만 몰랐나).

예를 들어 칸쿤에 A, B, C, D 업체가 있다고 치자. 나는 칸쿤에서 파나마 씨티까지 왕복할 예정이므로 각 렌트카 업체의 규정부터 펼쳐놓고 읽기 시작했는데, 어째 읽다보니 내 아무리 영어에 약해도 서로서로 상당히 비슷하게 느껴졌다. 아니, 그저 상당히 비슷한 정도가 아니라 그 이상이라고나 할까. 이상하다 싶어 모든 홈페이지 규정란을 동시에 띄워놓고 왔다갔다 비교해 보니 A와 C의 규정이 토씨 하나 안 틀리고 똑같고, B와 D의 규정이 마찬가지로 토씨 하나 안 틀리고 똑같다. 응??? (폰트나 바탕화면 색상 정도만 차이). 순간 당황했지만 곧이어 평정을 되찾고 아, 한 업체가 다른 업체의 규정을 그대로 베꼈나 보다 생각했다. 그런데도 어째 스물스물 올라오는 불안한 느낌... 행여나 하는 마음에 업체 주소를 비교해 보니 A, B, C가 똑같고, 대표 전화 번호를 비교해 보니 A, B, C, D가 다 똑같다 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 이게 뭐야. 나는 A 업체에서 연락이 안 오길래 B, C, D에 동시다발적으로 연락 취해볼 예정이었는데! (나중에 뭔 후기를 읽다보니 내가 미처 발견해내지 못한 E 마저 같은 업체인 모양이더라)

# 참고로 이외 현지에서 Easy Way라는 업체(http://www.tulumcarrental.com)가 비교적 좋은 평을 받고 있는 듯 하나, 이 곳 홈페이지에는 아래와 같은 문답이 있어 우리에겐 안 맞는 구석이 있는 듯 (사족으로, 이 업체의 홈페이지 주소는 상기 동일업체로 추정되는 업체들 중 하나와 상당히 유사하다. 왜 이렇게 만들었는지... 혹 너마저도 저쪽 애들과 모종의 관계를 맺고 있는 것이냐?)

Rent-a-Cars:

It's better to rent a car or a scooter if you plan to move around a lot;  it's cheaper than taxis.  But seriously consider using the bus and van system if you are in the Yucatan/Cancun area as they are very frequent, cheap and friendly. Better than the rip-off costs of car rentals.  Parking is a pain in the hotel zone.  When you buy gas, keep in mind that Mexican gas stations tend to overcharge (or undeliver) gas, ie: they tinker with the meter and charge you 10% more liters than what's actually delivered.  Also be sure to count out any cash you give to the attendant before handing it over. They tend to switch higher demonization bills with lower ones and then claim you did not pay enough.

As far as the price goes, keep in mind that the amount you are quoted on the phone or online can be significantly less than what you will pay by the time you've bought appropriate insurance and other unusual costs are added.  A $25 quoted daily rental turned nearly into $100 daily.  And you want that extra insurance because your own insurance is invalidated in Mexico, and police routinely arrest the various parties involved in a car accident until all legal matters are resolved.  Make sure your Mexican car insurance includes the health option (not just for you, but any other party), will cover legal expenses and will send a lawyer to the accident site or jail. 

이 단락과 관련하여 실제로 트립어드바이저의 후기 중 하나에는 다음과 같은 내용도 있다(비록 장소는 칸쿤이 아닌 멕시코 시티지만) 

just had very negative experience with Trinity in Mexico City, from $18 car per day, total was $118, they add "service charge", 16% government taxes, then weird not understandable 15% on top, then their exchange rate is 14.5 (20% more than real exchange rate of the day), so expect bill to be $150 at the end, as all car rental companies convert quoted price in dollar to pesos then charge to your card in dollars)

Police also routinely stop tourists in rented cars on bogus charges (you didn't stop for the topas, even though you don't have to and nobody else does either) etc. just to extort cash from you.  This is particularly common on the highway from Cancun to Tulum where there are numerous police checkpoints.  They want you to "take care of this now instead of going to the station", which means giving them cash.

방금 전 기존 인천<->칸쿤 왕복 항공권 마일리지 예약을 취소하고

예전 계획대로 인천->파나마, 칸쿤->인천 항공권 마일리지 예약을 벌써 몇번째 삽질 새로 시도했다.  

동일 마일리지 공제라면 기왕이면 칸쿤 단순 왕복 항공권보다는 일단 in/out이 다른 항공권을 잡아두는 것이 보다 내게 이익이 될 거라는 판단에서였는데... 예약이 완료되고 보니 기존 1인당 8만 마일 공제가 1인당 85000마일 공제로 늘어났다. 아래와 같이 대양주를 가나 미국을 가나 멕시코를 가나 중미를 가나 모두 8만 마일인데... 왜 이런 일이?

여기저기 막 클릭해보니 치사하게 멕시코는 중미로 치면서, 파나마는 남미 1구역으로 친단다. 파나마가 왜 남미야! 중미지! 지나가는 사람 100명 붙들고 물어봐!

때문에 슬프게도 1인당 85000마일 공제(X15원) + 기쁘게도 정말 2월부터 유할이 내려가서 2인 343000원 = 2인 총 2,893,000원 꼴.

(불행인지 다행인지 이 노선은 인터파크에서 적절한 대안을 찾아보기 어렵다. 일단 파나마까지 1회 환승으로 가기부터가... 쩝)
